Pinewood Derby Rules

PACK PINEWOOD DERBY RULES

1. All cars must meet the requirements for weight (as determined by the event scale), height, width, clearance, appearance,
etc. as presented below. A car will be given three opportunities to qualify by making adjustments. Any Scout cars, which
cannot qualify in the official race, still run in the Unlimited Class race. Once a car is registered, it may not be altered or
adjusted except as noted in Rule 5. The shape of the wheels may not be altered and the car must use the official BSA
axles.

2. A Scout car cannot be registered to run in an official race once the races for that Scout’s category have begun. Late
entrants can run in the Open Class race.

3. There are six classes: Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos (first and second year), Open Class and Unlimited Class. A car may
race in only one of these classes.

4. All cars will be assigned numbers at registration by class and each Scout may enter only one car.

5. Until the cars cross the finish line, the race is under the control of the Race Director. A “no race” can be declared at any
time that s/he determines that track conditions or other circumstances have created an unfair race. Mechanical failure of a
car that does not affect the opposing cars’ performance will not result in a “no race” decision. Emergency repairs on noneliminated
cars will be allowed at the Race Director’s discretion in the designated Pit Area.

6. Any spectator interfering with a race or not obeying the requests of the race officials may be asked to leave the building;
there will be no refunds of entry fees.

7. The Race Director will assign a Finish Line Judge to communicate the race results. While there may be an electronic
finish line to determine the winner of each race, results are not official until the Finish Line Judge declares the race was
fair and the results valid. Please refrain from flash photography at the finish line as it sometimes affects the electronic
finish line.

8. All Race Director and Finish Line Judge’s decisions are final.

9. Awards will be presented immediately following completion of the races for each rank.

10. Car construction requirements:
1. LENGTH, WIDTH & CLEARANCE
A. Maximum overall width (including wheels and axles) shall not exceed 2-3/4".
B. Minimum width between wheels shall be 1-3/4" so cars will clear the center guide strip.
C. Minimum clearance between the bottom of the car and the track shall be 3/8" so the car will clear the center guide
strip.
D. The maximum length shall not exceed 7".
E. IMPORTANT: The maximum height of the car is 6”. Any car taller than 6” may not be able fit under the finish
gate used by the Race Track. Cars over 6” tall shall not be allowed in even the Unlimited Class since they would
not be able to effectively race. A car this tall is not likely so this may never be an issue.

2. WEIGHT & APPEARANCE
A. Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces. The readings of the official race scale will be considered final. The car may
be hollowed out and built up to the maximum weight by the addition of wood or metal only, provided it is
securely built into the body or firmly attached to it. No loose materials of any kind are permitted in or on the car.
B. Details such as steering wheel, driver, spoiler, and decals are permissible as long as these details do not exceed
the maximum length, width and weight specifications.
C. Cars with wet paint will not be accepted.

3. WHEELS & AXLES
A. Only the official Scout Grand Prix wheels and axles can be used. Axles may be polished to reduce friction.
Wheels may be lightly sanded to remove the mold projection on the tread. This light sanding is the only wheel
modification allowed. Beveling, tapering, thin sanding, wafering, or lathe turning of the wheels is prohibited.
B. The pre-cut slots for the axles must be used, (a distance of 4 3/8”apart)
C. Wheel bearings, washers or bushings are prohibited.
D. The car shall not ride on any type of springs.
E. The car must be freewheeling with no starting device or other means of propulsion.

4. LUBRICATION
A. Only dry powdered lubricants such as graphite may be used. Regular oils and silicone sprays may soften the
plastic wheels.
B. Cars may be lubricated before inspection. Once a race class has begun no further lubrication will be permitted.
